Development of a business continuity management system with the 3-core BCM tool

Background

The 3-core GmbH was commissioned by a national gas supplier to implement a comprehensive Business Continuity Management System (BCMS) for the first time. During this project, business impact analyses (BIA) were completed for all critical business processes to assess the potential impact of a process failure and build a strong resilience strategy.

Solution

We started the project with a kick-off meeting to inform everyone who is involved in this project about the process and the goals. This meeting was organized to harmonise the expectations of the stakeholders and define the first steps in the BCMS cycle.

In collaboration with the customer, specific damage categories and dimensions were defined, which were necessary for carrying out the Business Impact Analysis (BIA). All relevant business processes were identified and analysed in collaboration with 10 process owners and their teams. The focus here was on assessing the impact of a possible process interruption on overall operations, determining dependencies on other business processes and identifying which resources are required to maintain all time-critical processes.

With the help of the 3-core BCM tool, the data was systematically collected and analysed, with over 150 business processes documented in depth and checked for their criticality. Finally, the results of the BIA were presented to the client in a presentation and the key findings were summarised and explained in a comprehensive report in both German and English.
