Consultation on emergency and business continuation plan for flood protection
Background
Our client, based in a flood zone, had received new requirements from its insurance company regarding preventive measures in the event of an incident. Our task was to fulfil the insurance company’s requirements. The insurance company demanded a detailed elaboration of a flood protection concept. In addition, the existing business continuity plan was to be expanded to include a risk analysis and recovery strategies in order to fulfil the requirements of business continuity management (BCM).
Solution
Firstly, we carried out thorough research into the flood risk at the company’s location. We carried out a detailed site inspection to obtain an accurate assessment of the potential damage in the event of flooding. We coordinated the management strategy in close cooperation with the relevant internal departments.
- In the next step, based on the findings and taking into account the insurance requirements, we developed a comprehensive flood protection concept that included the following key elements:
- Coordinated management strategy
- Description of an early warning system
- Structural, technical and organisational precautionary measures, as well as technical and organisational measures in the event of flooding
- Templates for checklists for measures in/before a flood, damage management and recovery
- Internal and external communication in the event of flooding
For the next project module – preparation of the business continuity plan – we carried out a detailed risk analysis that considered the potential impact of flooding on business operations. We created a risk matrix to visualise the risk landscape transparently and evaluated the results.
We then derived the appropriate recovery strategies according to the identified risks and integrated them into the business continuity plan. Finally, we adjusted existing parts of the business continuation plan to ensure conformity with the insurance company’s requirements.
